It's that time of year again! When children all over the country are coming home with news of what part they are going to play in the school nativity play. My youngest nephew is a king this year and he is bringing the frankincense or 'the other gift' as he says! At the same time as the rehearsals are going on the lists of toys are being negotiated and renegotiated in many households especially with the financial worries that so many people have to face at this time. BBC Radio 2 is running a campaign 'Don't cancel Christmas' and amidst all the hype we have Advent, the church's time of preparation for the coming of Christ.
In this preparation the emphasis in the first two weeks of Advent is on the second coming of Christ being a future reality. Perhaps it would be quite something if we managed to concentrate on this future hope amidst all the hectic preparations. Think for a moment: Christ will come again! What does this mean to you? How does this change the way you look at your life now? Do you really believe that He is going to come again? How can you make that a very real part of your preparation and celebration of Christmas this year? This part of our Advent season reminds us that we are to be people who look to the future with hope and allow that hope to transform our lives now. Christ will come again! Perhaps we could try and keep this message close to us in the weeks ahead because if we do it will change the way we prepare for Christmas forever.
