Anyone who has learnt a musical instrument will know the feeling of going to a lesson when you have made sure that you have done all your practice. Anyone who has learnt a musical instrument will also know the dread of going to a lesson when you haven't done enough or perhaps any practice at all. The same is true when we are learning and having lessons in anything. If we are prepared then we look forward to the lesson. If we are not then it can just go from bad to worse. I am reminded of these contrasting feelings by the readings that we have this week, the last week in the Church's year.
They are full of signs and omens of the end times. The question is: do we find the thought of the end times as something which worries and frightens us or something that we are prepared for and looking forward to. In other words: as Christians are we doing our practice? Last Sunday we had the parable of the sheep and the goats where those who cared for the hungry, thirsty, lonely, sick, in prison, stranger or naked were welcomed into the Kingdom of God. This is certainly one way that we can make sure that we do our practice so when we are called for our lesson with God we can look forward to it!
