Lectio Divina

   Father Chris' Journal:
Last week I had the opportunity to go on retreat at Ampleforth Abbey and it really was a privilege to be able to take some time to pray and reflect. It was very noticeable that when I told people where I was going a many genuinely wished that they could be going on retreat too. And a week after being back I could probably do with another one myself but for the fact that I love being in the parish and being busy! But it is important for us to try and make some time for peace and quiet each day and the more that seems impossible the more we need to try and do it.

One of the ways that we taught in prayer last week is an ancient form of prayer called Lectio Divina which involves taking a short passage of scripture and reading and reflecting on it. A lot of ruminating on the Word of God was suggested and whilst there are different ways that you can practice this form of prayer there is no doubt that it is a very powerful way to experience time of prayer and reflection. In an attempt to try and bring this more into my daily prayer I have a small book which I am writing a new phrase from scripture in each day. Last Sunday it was the response from the psalm 'I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever.'

As I reflected on these words and allowed them to stay with me throughout the day it gave a wonderful sense of perspective to things that were taking up too much of my thinking time and taking away my peace. Not much matters in comparison with the thought of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever and ever. I hope that I will continue to try and take a short phrase into each day in the weeks and months ahead as it gives me the taste of a retreat in the midst of everyday life. Perhaps it is something that you could try and do too.
