The Lenten Gym Workout!

   Father Chris' Journal:
In our primary school today (Ash Wednesday) we thought about Lent as a time for coming back to Jesus using three different steps: giving something up; saying some more prayers; and giving something to people in need. Once we had established the basic idea of what Lent is about with the three main ways to come back to God we started to think about it like a gym where we get into training for Easter!

So we had a think about the different types of machine that might be in a gym: a rowing machine; a step machine; a running machine; a bike; and a cross tredder (like walking with skis on and using ski poles as well. Each one could help us think about something to do with Lent:

  • The rowing machine - rowing back to God (with a rowing action);
  • The Step machine - the three steps involved in coming back to God (with a one potato, two potato action building up;
  • The Running machine - running away from temptation (running on apot or just arm movements;
  • The Cycling Machine - turning round and saying our prayers (turning with our hands one over each other like in actions to Kum By Ya;
  • The Cross Tredder - reaching out to others (reaching out one hand at a time)

Once we had had a think about this and practiced the actions we began our Lenten Gym Workout with some dance workout music to make it sound like a workout class in a gym. I used a tune downloaded from iTunes (other music download services are available) - there are lots that would do the job if you type in 'dance workout music') and I think it would be fair to say that it was good fun.

Hopefully it also got the message across that this is a time to be in training and a time when we come back to God using the three steps given to us by the Church of prayer fasting and almsgiving. If you work with younger children you might want to give it a go with them; or you might want to just come up with your own routine; or just laugh at the thought of me with headphones on in my office working out a routine. In the Primary school everybody joined in and we did it again at the end of Mass to remind us to get in shape. I did the routine in our secondary with no intention of them joining in but got a round of applause from Year 10 and 11! So happy Lent and get those spiritual muscles moving!
