Last night I went to the pantomime with my nephews (Oh no you didn't I hear you cry - Oh yes I did) and amongst the many old favourites there was a comedy version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The original version of the Twelve Days of Christmas is thought by many to be a coded way of teaching people about Catholicism during a time when it was illegal to do so. If you get the chance it's worth a Google to see the various explanations of the different numbers.
For me it gave me an idea for the family Mass which was taking place today as I like to try and do something a bit different. It gave me a structure for a homily which needed to put across something about the meaning behind the baptism of our Lord and how we are people of forgiveness. It soon became clear that once you have combined the two you are considering some of the most basic points about the incarnation. The challenge then was to word it for Year 3 children (aged 7 and 8).
I thought I would share the result with you because at any level these twelve points are fundamental to our understanding of what it means for God to enter our world and lead the way through baptism, to living out that baptism, through death to the resurrection. It goes to the tune of the Twelve Days of Christmas (sort of) if you feel like having a sing! I've put a recording of it on in case you want to hear it to teach a group of children (it might be of use) if so please feel free to have a go! I suggest adding actions for each verse to help the little ones join in and perhaps a picture for each verse as well would add to it if you used it for an assembly.
For everyone else who just wants to read this for themselves perhaps it would be good to reflect on each of these key moments in the life of Christ and how they are a gift to you at this time.
Just the last verse (to save space!)
When Jesus came from heaven to be with you and me:
He sent the Holy Spirit
Went back up to heaven
Rose from the dead
Died upon the cross
Gave us his Last Supper
Taught us to say sorry
Helped us love each other
Showed God's mighty power
He made people better
Gave us an example
He became a baby and
He showed us how to be happy!
