Last week, as part of our primary school's trip to London, we visited Madame Tussaud's wax work museum which, I have to be honest, I wouldn't have chosen to go to under any other circumstances. However I have to say that it was very enjoyable and made me reflect on two things in particular: God's love for each one of us and Christ's presence amongst us.
As part of the day for the children we were shown behind the scenes to see how the models were made. The attention to detail is incredible. I was struck in particular by the way that the hair is done. Rather than a wig being used, each hair is threaded individually onto the model. This takes three weeks, twenty four hours a day. I was immediately reminded of when Jesus tells us not to worry because God knows even the number of hairs that each one of us has on our heads. With this in mind, I asked if anybody had ever counted how many hairs are put on a model over the three weeks. The answer was: no! Even people who go to such trouble don't bother to count the hairs on the head and yet God our creator knows each one of us so intimately that he knows everything about us.
Each one of us is His creation and remembered by Him. Perhaps we forget that sometimes and feel that we ourselves our forgotten, and yet the very presence of Christ amongst us is a reminder of God's intimate love for each one of us which He wanted to reveal to us in a way we could understand: Jesus Christ, God made man; 'Emmanuel', God with us. And that is God with each one of us on our journey.
I thought about this as we went around the waxworks because it was fascinating to see how people reacted in the presence of a model of someone famous. The attitudes people took for photographs were quite strange: some were over familiar in a way they would never be if the person was actually there; others were behaving as if this really was the person themselves. It made me realise just how incredible a gift of faith it is for us to realise that Christ is present amongst us in a very real and powerful way: in the scriptures, in the Eucharist, in the sacraments, in our prayer, and just as importantly in those around us, in particular those who are in need. How do we respond to His presence amongst us? Do we recognise that He is present amongst us? Because Christ is with each one of us: He loves us; and calls us to love those around us as we love God, and we don't need a trip to the wax works to learn that!
