Last week I thought I had a bright idea based on a poster for the musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' which shows Jesus walking down the street and the different reactions to Him. I thought that it would be good to try and use this idea in the secondary school as part of preparation for the Year 9 'Day with a Difference' which is next week (8th March). I wanted the pupils to see the difference in any given situation when Jesus is included in the equation and also that He is present with them wherever they are.
And so a plan was hatched: choose somebody from Year 11 who would be confident enough to dress up in a white alb and go around school with Tina the school chaplain where she would take pictures of 'Jesus' in classrooms, on the corridors, in the dining hall and anywhere else we could think of and get away with, to then be used on the day. I was going to be there in a supportive role!
However yesterday when I arrived at school and texted the school chaplain to ask where she would be I received the reply 'In the staff room. Jesus is ill.' As I entered the staff room I said 'What do you mean Jesus is ill.' It turned out the Year 11 pupil was off sick and I was handed an alb and had to be his stand in! Suddenly my role had changed and I had to play a bit more than a supportive role in this awareness raising exercise: I had to play Jesus!
So began an amazing afternoon which included: lining up in the dinner hall; playing a keyboard in music; standing next to a workbench and next to people painting; in the head teacher's office in the middle of a Senior Management Meeting; next to a Bunsen burner surrounded by very enthusiastic Year Seven pupils; in the middle of a food technology (Cookery) lesson (making pasta); and trying to play football in a white alb (which is now a bit muddy). It was quite an experience!
It is unlikely that you will have to dress up in a white alb and do the same in your place of work or at home but we are called to be Christ to those around us so that they are aware of Christ and His presence amongst us and sometimes we have to just do it rather than talk about. It certainly made me think about the role each one of us has a Christian.
