Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, or Candle Mass as it is sometimes known. The introduction to the Mass reminds us that forty days after Christmas we remember the day that Christ was presented to Simeon in the Temple and he described Christ as the 'light to enlighten the Gentiles and give Israel, your people, peace.' Everybody stands with a lit candle as this is proclaimed and the candles are then blessed.
This unusual start to Mass makes us stop and think. It helps us to understand an ever present reality which we often take for granted or forget about altogether. It reminds us that Christ is with us. Holding a candle is a physical reminder that Christ is with us on our journey, whoever we are, wherever we are, whatever situation we are facing at this time.
Often in times of darkness we can feel totally alone and forget that Christ is present with us and forget to turn to him and allow him to lead the way through the darkness. In times of great celebration we can forget that Christ is with us and forget to thank him and allow him to lead us in our joy. And in the day to day routine of life we can take so much for granted including the presence of Christ that we forget to involve him in our lives and allow him to lead us on.
The Feast of Candle Mass helps us remember: God sent His only Son to save us; Jesus Christ suffered, died and rose from the dead; he is our hope and our salvation; and he is with us on our journey. It would be a wonderful sight to see everybody carrying a candle with them into all the different situations we face as reminder that Christ is with us but perhaps a bit dangerous and not allowed for health and safety reasons. Nevertheless we should imagine what that would look like and each day live as if we have that light of Christ in our hands because we do have it. Let's make sure that we allow it shine in our own lives and share that light with those around us. Christ our light! Thanks be to God!
